'The Bachelorette': Chris Harrison, ABC's battle with Reality Steve hits a peak
On Monday night's finale of "The Bachelorette", Ali Fedotowsky received her happy ending when she selected Roberto over Chris in a dramatic final episode in Bora Bora.
However, this may pale in comparison is some ways to the drama going on behind the scenes between ABC and blogger Reality Steve, otherwise known as the man largely responsible for spoiling the past few seasons of the show. Steve was recently featured in a special on E! about the show, but his footage mysteriously vanished from the program after its first airing .
"I’ve wanted to tell all of you just how great this season really was, but didn’t want to give anything away and ruin the ending. Why anybody would ever want to destroy the ending of a show for you, I’ll never understand. Some people just have this need to tear down what others create," Chris said.
There's some meaning behind the words to what Chris is saying here, though. If he really wanted to not give Steve and his blog any attention at all, then why go out of your way to reference him? This is not some sort of suggestion that the two parties are in cahoots (far from it), but Harrison must realize that as much as Mike Fleiss and company hate that their products are being spoiled, having Steve out there has actually helped the show in many ways.
Just look back at Jake's season for example -- would there have been as many gossip stories out there if we didn't know Jake was going to pick the much-maligned Vienna? This time around, it even seemed like the initial report that Ali was going to end up single framed how the "Bachelorette" herself acted in an interviews -- it enabled her the opportunity to throw people off. (Steve later corrected his spoilers on Monday to say that Ali does indeed end up with Roberto.)
So as much as ABC may not like spoilers, they are almost becoming a way of life for the show -- and a way for fans to feel more personally connected to what they are watching. Knowledge can be power, but for many fans wanting to know the behind-the-scenes details of every scandal, knowledge can be happiness.
